Entries are independently assessed by a panel of industry experts and rated against defined criteria. Each entrant receives a confidential Benchmark Report as part of their entry, offering expert feedback and clear direction for improvement.
Shortlisted finalists achieve the Packaging News Finalist Mark, a recognised badge of excellence. Winners achieving Gold, Silver or Bronze earn a Packaging News Sustainability Mark, the verified symbol of leadership in sustainable packaging.

Packaging Projects Categories
These awards recognise excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation. Entries should demonstrate measurable progress in reducing environmental impact, driving circularity and advancing material or process innovation. Judges will reward projects that set new standards in performance, creativity and responsibility.
Ambient & Pantry Packaging
This award recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation in the ambient food sector.
Judges will look over a variety of shelf-stable foods such as canned vegetables, canned goods, coffee, dry pasta, fruit, sauces, and tea and more. They will consider the sustainability credentials of the pack as well as how fit for purpose it is.

Chilled & Frozen Food Packaging
This award recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation in the Chilled/Frozen food sector.
The judging panel will look over packaging which specialises in the design and manufacture of various types and materials of packs that are stored in fridges and freezers, as well as those featuring temperature controlled packaging systems.
Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.
E-commerce & Home Packaging

This category is looking for sustainable innovation in the foodservice/food-on-the-go markets. Material choice and product protection will be major factors when being judged, along with ease of use and design.
Judges will reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.
Fresh Produce Packaging
This award recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.
The judging panel will examine various features and types of packaging, from punnets, flexible plastic bags, film, and the increasing trend in paper-based packaging for fruit and veg.
Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.
Snacks, Confectionery & Pet Food Packaging
A huge everyday category, this award recognises excellence in sustainable packaging design, production and innovation.
While judges will be looking for recyclability features of the most common snacks and confectionery packaging which is flexible packaging, particularly plastic such as bags, pouches, and films, paper, alternatives are challenging this space with their own versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness credentials.
Packs will need to demonstrate a step forward in the market and judges will also reward the pack that shows the best social and environmental credentials.
Business & Leadership Impact Categories
These awards recognise the people and organisations embedding sustainability, circularity and measurable progress across their operations, culture and supply chains.
Global Packaging Impact Award
This category celebrates an international packaging project or initiative that demonstrates measurable environmental and circular impact across multiple markets, including the UK. Entries should show how innovation, collaboration and scalability are driving tangible results in packaging sustainability on a global scale.
Recycler or Recovery Initiative of the Year
This category is open to recycling and waste-handling companies, as well as those companies significantly contributing to recycling in the packaging supply chain.
Sustainability Leader of the Year
This category is open to individuals working across the entire packaging supply chain including retailers, brand owners, manufacturers, designers, material suppliers and waste management companies.
Sustainable Innovation & Investment Award
